What is wpa-psk [tkip] + wpa2-psk [aes]? Where it is used for? When you’re shopping for a router, you’ll notice that many models offer multiple options for security. But not all Wi-Fi security options are created equal. This is no secret to us. We test routers for this very reason and have spent countless engineering hours optimizing our recommendations based on these results. To make a wireless network secure, you’ll likely need to set up several wireless security protocols. Numbering schemes and technical jargon may seem confusing. For example, WPA/WPA2 Personal, also known as WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key). It allows you to log in by entering a passphrase (a short sequence of letters and numbers) using the keypad of your wireless access point and your computer.
What does a router support?
A router can only support WEP. For example,
- It does not support the newer and more secure WPA or WPA2 security protocols. Some routers can connect with Wi-Fi clients (a laptop or mobile device) using the N standard. Which is slower and less secure than the newer 802.11n standard used in most modern wireless networks.
- Routers that include WPA2-PSK (TKIP), WPA2-PSK (AES), and WPA2-PSK (TKIP/AES) as options provide the fastest, most secure wireless network. Choosing those options, though, doesn’t always mean you have enabled all three. WEP, WPA, and WPA2 are the primary security protocols you’ll see when setting up a wireless network.

What are [tkip] and [aes]?
In a Wi-Fi network, TKIP and AES are the two different systems for encryption. AES is the newer, more secure encryption protocol introduced with WPA2 to replace the older WEP encryption. You should always use AES over TKIP as it is far more confident, and there are no known significant vulnerabilities. When using AES, which there are when using TKIP. What if you have an older device on your network that can’t support AES but will need to be kept on the web? The answer is TKIP. Yet another new feature called Multiple SSID would let you essentially create two Wi-Fi networks from one access point. One of the SSIDs would operate securely (AES), and the other one, working with TKIP, would please those legacy devices that require it.
Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is a much more secure encryption protocol that is now preferred over TKIP. AES uses symmetric key cryptography to encrypt data. This means that both ends of a conversation must share the same secret key. It’s important to note that you’re using an older device that supports only TKIP or WEP. It won’t connect to your new router unless you enable one of these outdated protocols on the router itself.

How to secure this TKIP network?
If you’re stuck using a TKIP-based access point, the AiroPeek is a small piece of Wi-Fi network hardware. It enables WPA and WPA2 clients to decrypt TKIP encrypted Wi-Fi traffic. That means if an attacker has your clear-text password and is monitoring the network traffic. Most Home networks have a passphrase to keep unwanted guests, but public open Wi-Fi networks don’t. So you shouldn’t connect to an available Wi-Fi network—especially while traveling in a foreign country. It opens your device up to security risks.
Tip 2: Use of WEP
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is an old protocol for wireless network security. Unfortunately, it has a weak connection, and you really shouldn’t use it. Created by a national security expert, WPA2 is made for today’s world of more ingenious mobile devices. This robust encryption technology prevents others from eavesdropping on your Wi-Fi connection.
Tip 3: Use of WEP 128
There were no security flaws to be found with WEP 128. There are no free packets of the encryption key for one of these. Instead, the problem with WEP was a fundamental lack of complexity, and even the larger encryption key sizes don’t solve that.
Tip 4: WPA (TKIP)
The latest WPA (TKIP) version is the best option for Windows XP. It is superseded by WPA2 but is still quite commonly used. Many routers have this option because it’s considered the best compatible option with the least setup hassle.
Tip 5: The WPA-PSK (AES)
The WPA-PSK (AES) option is a replacement for TKIP, which is problematic because it has known security deficiencies. AES encrypts data at 256 bits and is the strongest encryption you can use without worrying about compatibility issues.
Tip 6: set up an open network
To keep everybody’s devices connected at all times. Therefore, it is advisable to set up an open network instead of a WPA2-PSK (TKIP) type of connection. Many modern and legacy devices on our networks support WPA2-PSK only—and cannot connect to a WPA2-Personal or WPA2-Enterprise network. Deploying this option makes it easier for your users to connect to the network with devices that would otherwise be incompatible with these networks.
In conclusion of WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES], with WPA2 encryption enabled, you won’t experience this problem. The newer standard has built-in security options that will not restrict the Wi-Fi network from operating at its full speed. However, WPA2 is a standard, and it’s vulnerable to hacking like WEP. Also, it is a bit more complicated to set up on your Wi-Fi router than WPA, but once it is enabled on your home network, you are free to connect via 802.11n and 802.11ac devices at their full speeds. Choose TKIP or AES with WPA2 — it depends on the firmware of your wireless router. Go with AES if it offers it. Otherwise, go with whatever your router’s firmware supports. AES is more secure and supported by more devices, so let’s choose that one.
